Dance has always been an integral part of my life as I have been dancing since the age of 3. I started off taking ballet and tap when I lived in Arkansas. Then I moved to Florida and switched over to jazz and lyrical classes at the Titusville Ballet and Jazz Center. As I strengthened my technique and performance skills, I joined the first year of Performance Dance Company which, later, changed to the Keegan Performance Company. We would compete at Showstopper and Nexstar, as well as perform at Orlando Magic games. I, then, advanced to the more competitive team, Keegan Dance Company which also competed at various dance competitions. As I finished out my high school career, I thought I was done with dancing since I did not intend to pursue it as a career and instead focus on my major of business marketing. But I joined the Knights and Damsels Dance Company after encountering the club at my orientation.
Knights and Damsels Dance Company is dance organization within the University of Central Florida founded in 2012. We are jazz based but we dance in various styles such as contemporary, hip hop, lyrical, and tap. We perform at events throughout Orlando and central Florida such as Orlando International Fashion Week, Dancing for Diabetes, and greek events. Our most recent and first performance of the year was at Zeta Lip Sync 2017. Our talented Artistic Board produced a jungle themed routine.
Knights and Damsels Dance Company also offers weekly classes on Wednesdays throughout the semester. We have a diverse group of guest teachers and teachers from the team. We create an outlet for these individuals to show their choreography in styles such as heels, ballet, hip hop, tap, jazz, theatre, contemporary, etc. and help them gain experience. These classes are $5 per class and $35 per semester.
I have been apart of the KDDC team since Fall of 2016. Currently, I am the secretary for the Knights & Damsels 2017-2018 team. My responsibilities include creating content for various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat and maintaining client relations with the various teachers and members. I also help coordinate the team and keep records of attendance. As a member of the team, I have grown so much as a dancer and have been able to bring my assets to the team. I am very thankful for being apart of this organization and help head the team.
